Nokia Expands AirScale with New 5G Solutions and Enhancements

Nokia is expanding its AirScale small cell portfolio with new indoor and outdoor 5G solutions designed to improve coverage and capacity.

The headline addition is a new line of micro Remote Radio Heads (mRRH) intended to boost outdoor 5G capacity and coverage in dense urban areas.

Thanks to their compact form factor, the mRRHs allow operators to densify networks in locations where traditional macro cells are impractical. Their lower power consumption also helps reduce operating expenses.

Nokia’s mRRH range includes a product tailored for the US C-Band (n77) and another that supports n79, widening mid-band deployment options for service providers.

Rémy Pascal, Principal Analyst at Omdia, commented:

“Nokia has maintained its position as one of the top small cell manufacturers for five consecutive years according to our research. This new portfolio of AirScale indoor and outdoor solutions should enhance their standing as an industry leader, particularly given their support for key frequency bands including the C-Band.”

For indoor coverage, Nokia introduced a new pico Remote Radio Head (pRRH) that meets US C-Band requirements, plus a new triple-band pRRH that is the first integrated 4G/5G pRRH in Nokia’s portfolio.

Nokia’s updated Smart HUB increases 5G throughput capacity and includes a Hybrid Fiber Converter, enabling hybrid fiber connections to existing pRRHs offered as part of the AirScale Indoor Radio Solutions (ASiR) family.

Many of Nokia’s small cells are powered by its latest-generation ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, which raises throughput capacity to as much as 84 Gbps while reducing power consumption by up to 64 percent.

Mark Atkinson, SVP of Radio Access Networks PLM at Nokia, said:

“We are delighted to announce the launch of our new range of small cells products, which further strengthens our award-winning and industry-leading portfolio. The portfolio is bolstered by the inclusion of the latest ReefShark chipsets and support for all frequency ranges including the C-Band. I look forward to supporting our customers’ requirements for premium coverage and capacity both indoors and outdoors.”

Nokia also unveiled new mmWave radios designed to deliver very high-capacity 5G connectivity in high-footfall venues such as stadiums and airports. The mmWave portfolio supports major spectrum bands including 24/26 GHz, 28 GHz, and 39 GHz.
