The outlook for HTC in the coming quarter appears challenging despite the recent success of its flagship, the HTC One, which has outperformed last year’s models. The company, however, warns that this positive trend is unlikely to continue into the third quarter.
For the first time in its history, HTC is forecasting an operating loss of up to 8 percent. But how severe is the situation behind the headline figures?
Looking at the numbers, HTC expects its operating margin to fall to between 0% and -8% in Q3, down from 1.5% in Q2. Gross margin is projected to drop to a range of 18%–21%, compared with 23% in the prior quarter. Most crucially, revenue is forecast to decline to NT$50 billion–NT$60 billion (approximately $1.67 billion–$2.01 billion).
HTC attributes much of the pressure to limited penetration in the mid-range smartphone segment. The company plans to address this gap with new devices such as the anticipated HTC One Mini. Yet the competitive landscape presents a significant challenge: Apple.
Reports suggest Apple is preparing a lower-cost iPhone, commonly referred to as the iPhone 5C. Presented in a range of bright colors, this model is expected to attract strong consumer interest. If the 5C matches the specifications of the current iPhone 5 while undercutting price points, HTC’s One Mini—even if superior on many hardware fronts—could face difficulty competing purely on price.
HTC’s potential response could hinge on pricing strategy: if HTC can position the One Mini with a more attractive price than Apple’s offering, the company may still improve its performance in Q4.
The company says it has already “taken actions” to address these challenges in time for Q4, including a broader lineup of mid-tier products aimed at improving market penetration. HTC also notes that the HTC One has helped improve brand perception. Reviewers and industry observers have praised the One for its distinctive design and innovative features, marking a departure from the more restrained styling of some previous HTC models.
Whether HTC’s strategic adjustments will reverse the downward trend remains to be seen. The market will provide clearer answers when Q4 financial results are released and the impact of new mid-range devices can be measured.
