Helium Mobile Debuts $5/Month Unlimited Mobile Plan

Helium Mobile, billed as the “People’s Carrier,” aims to shake up the telecom industry with a low-cost unlimited plan.

Helium Mobile has introduced a no-contract $5/month plan, launching first in Miami, that includes unlimited talk, text, and data. This offering relies on Helium Mobile’s Dynamic Coverage model.

Dynamic Coverage lets subscribers connect to both the local Helium network — run by a global community of individuals rewarded with crypto for contributing coverage — and T-Mobile, one of the largest 5G networks in the United States.

By combining a decentralized, people-powered network with national carrier coverage, Helium Mobile is able to lower operational costs and offer nationwide service at unusually low prices.

Amir Haleem, CEO and co-founder of Nova Labs (the team behind Helium), said:

“As a critical service, mobile connectivity should be accessible to all.

Helium Mobile is redefining the industry with high-quality service at ground-breaking prices, using Dynamic Coverage to connect subscribers to the Helium Network.”

The Helium community has grown the open-source mobile network rapidly; deployments now cover more than 1,500 cities across the United States.

Miami, with its active Helium Network and strong Web3 development ecosystem, was selected by community members as the first city to receive Helium Mobile’s $5 plan.

Boris Renski, Wireless GM at Nova Labs, added:

“Miami is the ideal launching point for Helium Mobile because of the existing vibrant Helium Network and as the home of immense crypto development.

It only makes sense that Helium Mobile develops its ground-breaking service in the City of Miami to demonstrate the potential of a people-powered network.”

Starting today, Miami residents can sign up for the Helium Mobile $5 Unlimited Plan at hellohelium.com/miami.

Helium Mobile plans are scheduled to expand to additional metropolitan markets later this year. To be notified when service becomes available in your area, you can join the waitlist at hellohelium.com/waitlist.

Despite clear benefits highlighted by proponents of Web3, Helium has faced criticism and controversy alongside its growth.

Controversies surrounding Helium

Helium has faced scrutiny over allegedly misleading partnership claims. In one instance, companies listed in Helium’s ecosystem were reported to have denied current partnerships, prompting founder Amir Haleem to clarify the platform’s approach to listing partners and to remove companies lacking written confirmation.

Some critics also point to the company’s reliance on CBRS-equipped hotspots, which can be costly for users and have limited range and availability. Detractors argue this undercuts Helium’s claims of dependable local coverage.

Security and privacy concerns have also accompanied the Helium Mobile rollout. The company states it employs secure networks and data protection for its 5G and IoT services, but has provided limited public detail about specific safeguards and data-sharing practices.

IoT devices are often vulnerable to hacking, interception, or spoofing because of weak or hardcoded passwords, insecure protocols, and outdated encryption. These industry-wide risks raise questions about how Helium Mobile protects subscriber data and the devices that use its network.

Another point of debate is that Helium Mobile does not accept cryptocurrency payments, which some see as at odds with the project’s “people-powered” and crypto-oriented roots.

The Miami launch marks an important moment for Helium Mobile and the broader telecom landscape: the service promises to disrupt traditional pricing models while facing legitimate questions about coverage reliability, security, and operational transparency. How Helium addresses these concerns will influence whether it can scale its model successfully across more cities.
