BRITISH COLUMBIA’S TECH TALENT AND LIVABILITY DRIVE INDUSTRY GROWTH
On Canada’s west coast, the province of British Columbia is experiencing rapid growth in its technology sector. While Silicon Valley often dominates conversations about high tech, British Columbia’s expanding digital media industry, growing talent pool and vibrant cities—especially Vancouver and Victoria—are drawing major corporations, innovative startups and strategic partnerships.
Vancouver alone is home to more than 800 companies working in digital film, animation and visual effects, video games, mobile content and applications, and e-learning, collectively generating around $3 billion in annual revenue. That concentration of firms creates a robust ecosystem for collaboration, talent development and creative innovation.
Several factors make Vancouver and Victoria appealing locations for technology companies. In 2013 Vancouver was named the most livable city in North America; Victoria, the provincial capital on scenic Vancouver Island, also offers an attractive quality of life. These cities provide a strong work–life balance, outdoor recreation and cultural amenities that help employers recruit and retain top technical and creative talent.
Geographic proximity to technology hubs in Washington State and California is another advantage. Vancouver and Victoria are well positioned for collaboration with companies and research centers in Seattle and Redmond, strengthening cross-border partnerships in entertainment, software and digital services.
Numerous companies have expanded or established operations in the region. Vancouver’s Black Tusk Studios, part of Microsoft’s entertainment and gaming division, and local developer East Side Games are among the notable names. Victoria has attracted offices from Zynga and GameHouse, as well as San Francisco-based Kixeye, known for titles such as Backyard Monsters, Battle Pirates and War Commander.
Industry leaders consistently highlight the strength of British Columbia’s workforce. Local technology entrepreneur Clayton Stark, who has been involved with Zynga and Flock, observed that “the talent is available here more than it is in Silicon Valley,” noting that recognition of the region’s capabilities is still catching up. British Columbia benefits from strong research institutions and educational programs in science, technology and design, which supply a steady stream of skilled graduates and support industry-focused innovation.
For companies exploring international trade and investment options, British Columbia offers a combination of skilled talent, strategic location and high quality of life that supports sustainable growth in the digital media and technology sectors.
