Open Networking Foundation Debuts Aether: 5G Edge Cloud as a Service

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) has introduced Aether, an open-source platform designed to deliver enterprise-grade 5G and LTE edge computing as a service.

Aether provides mobile connectivity and edge cloud services for distributed enterprise networks, all provisioned and administered from a centralized cloud. According to ONF, the platform is straightforward to deploy, highly scalable, and built to enable rapid onboarding of edge services across multi-cloud environments. By simplifying deployment and reducing the cost and complexity of private mobile networks, Aether aims to make advanced 4G/5G networking capabilities accessible to more enterprises.

As with other ONF initiatives, Aether is supported by the foundation’s operator partners, including AT&T, China Unicom, and Deutsche Telekom. Jochen Appel, VP of fixed and mobile platforms at Deutsche Telekom, said the company is “eagerly looking forward” to the project and called Aether “another example of how ONF can rapidly develop new solutions by building on top of existing open-source platforms.”

In related cloud-native news, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has added two new members. Eficode, a European company specializing in DevOps, software, automation, and design, has joined the CNCF and become a Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP). Eficode earned KCSP status based on its extensive experience in Kubernetes consulting and training. Marko Klemetti, CTO of Eficode, noted that combining containers, Kubernetes, and continuous delivery solutions enables the company to help clients meet and exceed their DevOps goals.

TriggerMesh, a provider of a Kubernetes-based cloud-native integration platform, has also joined the CNCF. Mark Hinkle, co-founder of TriggerMesh, said that CNCF membership will help raise awareness of TriggerMesh as it builds a cloud-native integration platform tailored for the serverless era. TriggerMesh’s platform integrates multiple cloud services and legacy applications, coordinating them into serverless workflows to simplify and modernize application integration.
