Gemalto has introduced the Cinterion ELS31, a new LTE Category 1 wireless module designed specifically for machine-to-machine (M2M) and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The ELS31 strengthens 4G LTE connectivity for devices that need reliable, efficient cellular links without requiring the high bandwidth of consumer LTE services.

Engineered for power efficiency, the module supports single-mode LTE with data rates up to 10 Mbit/s downlink and 5 Mbit/s uplink. Those capabilities make it well suited for a broad range of IoT use cases such as utility metering, asset tracking and tracing, fleet management, and mobile health (mHealth) solutions that demand consistent connectivity and low energy consumption.

Built to operate in demanding environments, the ELS31 maintains functionality across a wide temperature range from −40°C to 85°C. The module also eases migration paths for existing 2G and 3G devices moving to LTE networks, helping developers and operators future-proof deployments. Gemalto offers the module with Full Type Approval and local operator certifications to simplify integration and accelerate time to market.

Josh Builta, associate director of M2M at IHS, commented that while mobile networks everywhere are rapidly transitioning to LTE, many industrial M2M and IoT applications do not require the high-speed bandwidth typical of consumer 4G services. He noted that LTE Cat 1 modules strike a balance by delivering the performance and features most industrial deployments need while providing a cost-effective solution that addresses long-term network evolution concerns.

Gemalto says the ELS31 supports the anticipated growth of M2M connections, which analysts expect to increase substantially in the coming years, and that the module will contribute to broader adoption of IoT technologies across multiple industries. The announcement follows recent activity from the company in the M2M space, including its selection by Tigo—the rapidly expanding mobile operator in Colombia—to supply a suite of M2M solutions across Latin America.

By focusing on low-power operation, rugged temperature tolerance, and certified compliance, the Cinterion ELS31 targets enterprises and solution providers who require dependable LTE connectivity for large-scale IoT rollouts without unnecessary complexity or excess data capability. This positioning makes the module a practical option for deployments where long battery life, device longevity, and simplified network transition are primary considerations.
