Qatar, a dynamic economy in the Middle East, is experiencing a rapid rise in smartphone adoption and a corresponding surge in mobile data demand. To meet this growing need and improve service for end users, Ooredoo Qatar has signed a three-year agreement with Nokia to upgrade and expand its existing mobile broadband network nationwide. The upgrade will cover 2G, 3G, 4G LTE and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) radio technologies, along with core network elements and related services.
The agreement includes deployment of core network components such as an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and a Home Subscriber Server (HSS). Nokia will also provide the NetAct operations support system across radio and core technologies to give Ooredoo full network visibility and streamlined management. In addition to hardware and software, Nokia will supply network planning, optimization, implementation and care services to support ongoing performance and reliability.
Under Ooredoo Qatar’s Supernet initiative, the operator has already implemented Nokia’s LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation technology to deliver peak user speeds of up to 375 megabits per second for compatible devices in busy areas of Doha, the capital. In a recent trial, the companies reported peak data rates approaching 600 Mbps. Ooredoo is an international communications provider offering mobile, fixed and broadband internet services, as well as corporate managed services tailored to the needs of consumers and businesses across the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia.
The Nokia partnership strengthens Ooredoo Qatar’s ability to scale capacity, improve coverage and introduce advanced mobile broadband capabilities as demand continues to grow. By modernizing both radio and core elements and deploying sophisticated network management tools, the operator aims to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity and better quality of experience for its customers.
