Danish telecom leader TDC Group has chosen Ericsson to deploy commercial 5G across Denmark.
As part of a large-scale network modernization, the partnership will deliver services using the Ericsson Operations Engine and help advance TDC’s “Digital Denmark” initiative. The upgrade aims to enable mobile broadband subscribers, businesses, and industrial customers to take full advantage of 5G, IoT, and Industry 4.0 capabilities.
Ericsson will supply its 5G platform for TDC’s cellular network. The agreement includes modernization of TDC’s Radio Access Network (RAN) with Ericsson Radio System solutions and an upgrade of the core network using Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Cloud Core.
Ericsson 5G New Radio (NR) hardware and software products are scheduled for rollout in 2019 to align with Denmark’s 5G licensing requirements. Initial pilot testing is expected from mid-2019 and will be available to selected customers. The full commercial network is planned to begin once licensed 5G spectrum becomes available, with an anticipated start in October.
Recently, Ericsson announced a multi-year collaboration with Intel to deliver greater cloud-like agility, transparency, and efficiency for NFV, distributed cloud, and 5G environments. That hardware management platform extends cloud agility to physical infrastructure, aiming to accelerate time-to-market, improve resource utilization, and reduce total cost of ownership.
In a separate development earlier this year, Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom demonstrated a millimetre-wave link achieving a 40 Gbps data transmission rate. The trial also addressed stringent latency requirements for 5G, targeting low and ultra-low latency use cases. The tested link delivered round-trip latency below 100 microseconds, illustrating how wireless backhaul technologies can contribute to meeting demanding latency targets in next-generation networks.
