Tencent has become the newest member of the LoRa Alliance, joining more than 500 companies in the fastest-growing technology non-profit dedicated to promoting the LoRaWAN open standard. The LoRa Alliance drives large-scale adoption of Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) for the Internet of Things (IoT), and Tencent’s membership strengthens the alliance’s global ecosystem.
Tencent has invested substantially in LoRaWAN-related technologies and applications and will actively contribute to the continued development of the LoRaWAN ecosystem. The company plans to build a LoRaWAN network in Shenzhen with local partners and to deliver integrated device-to-edge-to-cloud LoRaWAN solutions across its network. These solutions target a broad range of IoT use cases, including government public services, industrial manufacturing, smart-city applications, and personal IoT devices.
Hongtao Bie, Vice President of Tencent Technologies, emphasized the growing importance of LPWANs: “LPWANs are essential for IoT technology and applications, and the market is expanding rapidly in China, particularly in government public services, industrial manufacturing, and personal IoT devices.” Tencent’s participation signals strong commercial interest in low-power, wide-area connectivity as cities and industries scale IoT deployments.
Earlier, Tencent signed a memorandum of understanding with Nokia to collaborate on research and development and to explore 5G opportunities in China. The partnership includes establishing an end-to-end 5G test environment in Shenzhen and leveraging 5G-enabled AI and automation management capabilities. This collaboration is intended to promote international standards and foster an open-source ecosystem that supports evolving services and technologies. The joint effort is expected to benefit multiple markets such as entertainment, transportation, intelligent manufacturing, energy, and finance by accelerating innovation and deployment of advanced connectivity solutions.
By combining Tencent’s cloud and platform strengths with LoRaWAN’s low-power, long-range connectivity, the initiative aims to accelerate IoT adoption across smart cities and industries. Tencent’s network rollout in Shenzhen will serve as a practical testbed for real-world applications, helping public-sector organizations, manufacturers, and service providers trial scalable IoT services with energy-efficient connectivity.
As LoRaWAN deployments expand, benefits include extended battery life for devices, lower operational costs for wide-area coverage, simplified device provisioning, and strong interoperability across vendors. Tencent’s involvement in the LoRa Alliance and its planned Shenzhen network deployment are likely to encourage broader adoption of LPWAN technologies in China, supporting both urban and industrial IoT use cases.
Overall, Tencent’s membership in the LoRa Alliance and its collaboration on 5G research signal a strategic push to integrate complementary wireless technologies—LoRaWAN for low-power wide-area connectivity and 5G for high-bandwidth, low-latency use cases—into a holistic IoT and digital services ecosystem. This combined approach aims to provide flexible, scalable networks that meet diverse requirements across government services, industry, and consumer applications.
