BT has launched Halo 3+, a broadband service that uses EE’s extensive mobile network as a backup to deliver greater reliability.
Halo 3+ introduces a new plug-and-play device called Hybrid Connect. The unit works straight out of the box and provides customers with immediate confidence that their home will stay connected even if their fibre service faces an interruption.
For new customers or those who have just moved into a new home, Halo 3+ also makes it possible to get online while waiting for full broadband activation.
Christian Thrane, Managing Director of Marketing for BT Consumer, said:
“With BT Halo 3+, we’re launching an innovative new category of home broadband that’s a first of its kind in the UK.
We combine leading fibre broadband and WiFi technology with the resilience of our award-winning EE mobile network, making us the only UK provider to offer customers an effectively unbreakable home WiFi connection.
Halo 3+ delivers a highly reliable service and strong coverage across the whole home, giving families the peace of mind to work, home-school, or keep in touch without unexpected interruptions.”
BT acquired EE in 2016 for £12.5 billion, a merger that joined the UK’s largest broadband provider and a major mobile network. Although the deal faced close scrutiny from British and European competition regulators, it was approved and has since shaped BT’s strategy.
Since the acquisition, BT has used EE as a key differentiator by offering combined broadband, mobile, and TV packages. Halo 3+ is the latest example of BT’s convergence strategy, blending fixed and mobile services to improve customer experience.
Matthew Howett, Principal Analyst and Founder of Assembly Research, commented:
“The past year has underlined how important fast, and above all reliable, broadband is as many of us work, learn, and entertain ourselves at home.
True convergence means fixed and mobile networks working seamlessly for consumers.
The Hybrid Connect device is a strong initial step toward that vision, reinforcing an always-on promise at a time when households need uninterrupted connectivity more than ever.”
Customers subscribing to Halo 3+ receive full-fibre broadband, the Hybrid Connect device, Smart Hub 2, and BT’s Complete WiFi guarantee, which promises a reliable signal in every room or £100 back. The package also includes BT Mobile benefits such as a double data boost for all household members.
Halo 3+ became available on 5 February. Pricing for new customers starts from £65.99 per month. BT says existing customers will be offered competitive deals and encourages them to contact the company to discuss their options.
Existing BT customers can add the Hybrid Connect device to their current packages for £7 per month.
BT has committed to no out-of-contract price rises and says existing customers will not pay more than new customers for equivalent services.
