Sky Mobile Gains Early Access to O2’s 5G Network

Sky Mobile has extended its MVNO agreement with Telefónica to secure access to O2’s 5G network once it goes live.

Launched in 2016, Sky’s mobile arm has grown rapidly, helped by attractive bundles that combine broadband, landline, TV and mobile services. Few providers can match that quad-play offering, which has become an important differentiator in a competitive market.

While research shows strong consumer appetite for quad-play bundles, the arrival of 5G could tempt customers to switch to alternative providers. To avoid losing momentum, Sky has acted early to guarantee its customers access to O2’s 5G services as soon as they are available.

Stephen van Rooyen, Sky CEO for UK and Ireland, commented:

“This long-term deal furthers our strategic partnership with Telefónica UK, accelerates the growth of Sky Mobile and ensures our customers continue to enjoy great service including 5G connectivity.”

O2’s full 5G rollout remains some way off, but the operator has already started several trial deployments, including at the iconic O2 Arena in London.

Theo Blackwell, London’s Chief Digital Officer, said:

“O2’s decision to bring 5G technology to one of the world’s most iconic entertainment venues reinforces London’s status as a global leader in digital innovation and investment.

I want London to be the world’s leading smart city and these 5G trials at The O2 will give visitors an early opportunity to experience the enhanced services that can be supported by 5G digital connectivity.”

O2 has also launched a programme inviting FTSE 100 companies to take part in 5G testbeds, describing the initiative as a pioneering move to help drive national productivity and boost the economy.

The operator says the testbeds will enable large businesses to explore processes and use cases that could benefit from 5G, helping them understand practical deployment and value generation.

On the initiative, O2 CEO Mark Evans said:

“Mobile, and specifically 5G, is one of the UK’s most powerful opportunities to strengthen our economy, enrich our society, and outperform on the global stage.

Our national Testbed commitment is a testament to this belief and we are excited by the value it could create for UK Plc.”

Sky Mobile’s renewed commitment to O2 underlines the strength of their partnership. Although Sky has developed many of its own core systems, extending the agreement ensures customers will benefit from 5G coverage as soon as O2’s network is ready.

Sky’s full-year financial results show revenue rose five percent to £14 billion, figures that coincide with acquisition interest from 20th Century Fox and Comcast and are likely the company’s last as a public entity.
