Nokia today introduced NetGuard, a network-wide security management platform designed to help operators monitor and control multi-vendor security systems across their telecommunications infrastructure. The new tool aims to simplify security operations and improve protection in increasingly complex, heterogeneous networks.
After exiting the handset market and selling its devices division to Microsoft in 2013, Nokia has concentrated on network infrastructure and is in the process of integrating Alcatel‑Lucent. NetGuard reflects that focus, targeting the growing need for unified security management as networks expand and connect a wide range of devices.
Security concerns remain a major barrier to Internet of Things (IoT) adoption. For example, the Vodafone Barometer 2015 found that 64% of businesses consider security and privacy the main obstacles to wider machine-to-machine deployment. NetGuard is intended to give both operators and equipment manufacturers greater confidence when deploying IoT services, by offering centralized visibility and control.
Giuseppe Targia, Head of Security at Nokia, explained the rationale behind the platform: “Networks are becoming more heterogeneous and open, leaving them increasingly prone to cyberattacks. Any subsequent degradation of network performance, whether a partial or complete outage, is one of the biggest threats to operators. The impact of such an event can range from a few dissatisfied customers to severe damage to the entire business. Our NetGuard Security Management Center gives operators confidence that their whole networks are safe, not just some individually protected parts.”
NetGuard focuses on fast detection and prevention of attacks while also improving operational efficiency. By automating and standardizing security policy configuration, enabling bulk firmware upgrades, and verifying vendor-specific hardening settings, the platform aims to reduce the total cost of security for operators.
Key features of NetGuard Security Management Center include:
- Integration of all network security systems regardless of vendor, enabling centralized monitoring of security status and management of incidents, vulnerabilities, policies, and network access.
- Proactive threat detection that identifies security weaknesses and correlates them using an internal threat database.
- Rules-based, configurable analytics that apply decision-making logic to trigger automated corrective actions or support manual operator responses.
- Optimization of security parameter configurations to lower the risk of infrastructure attacks.
- A comprehensive, cross-layer perspective—unlike vertical solutions that protect individual elements, NetGuard correlates events from radio access, transport, core, and operations layers to detect and mitigate a broader range of threats.
Dr. Stefan Pütz, Vice President of Network Security at Deutsche Telekom, commented on the platform’s potential: “We at Deutsche Telekom highly appreciate Nokia’s approach, which comprehensively addresses security with a consolidated solution that brings much greater value than the sum of individual security modules. For instance, with the automated security audit together with security alarm correlation, we will be able to pinpoint attacks that today’s networks simply cannot detect.”
As cyberattacks grow in frequency and sophistication, carriers and IoT service providers need tools that offer a holistic approach to threat detection, incident management, and policy enforcement. NetGuard is positioned to become a central component of operators’ defensive strategies by consolidating visibility, automating routine security tasks, and enabling faster, more coordinated responses to incidents across multi-vendor environments.
