UK Mobile Landscape H1 2023: Key Trends and Insights

In the first half of 2023, RootMetrics carried out extensive testing to evaluate the mobile experience for end users across major metropolitan areas, individual nations, and the UK as a whole.

EE continued to lead the market in the UK-wide assessments. The operator topped all seven RootScore categories and earned the UK Overall RootScore Award for the tenth consecutive year.

Marc Allera, CEO of EE, commented:

“The quality and reliability of mobile networks are now more important to more people than ever before. Being the UK’s number one mobile network for a decade reflects our focus on network quality as central to the customer experience.

We are at the start of a new chapter in the mobile industry, one in which EE will evolve to deliver more than the connectivity we’re known for. Having a strong foundation as the UK’s best mobile network for ten years gives us a platform to build an exciting future.”

EE posted an aggregate median download speed of 65.1 Mbps, the fastest among operators and supportive of smooth gaming and video streaming. Vodafone recorded a median of 29.4 Mbps and held a solid second place, while Three (34.7 Mbps) and Virgin Media O2 (15.5 Mbps) also showed marked improvements in speed and overall performance.

Performance by nation

RootMetrics assessed mobile performance across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, conducting comprehensive tests in urban centres, rural areas and on roadways to capture a broad view of real-world service.

EE stood out again at the nation level, claiming 25 UK Nation RootScore Awards out of 28 opportunities.

Three showed encouraging results in England, and Virgin Media O2 delivered consistent performance across all four nations. Vodafone increased its tally of nation-level awards significantly, reflecting notable gains in call quality and accessibility.

Metro area performance

Mobile performance in major metropolitan markets reflects service across city centres, suburbs, business districts and tourist areas—not just downtown cores.

EE continued to dominate major cities, earning the most RootScore Awards while delivering fast speeds and strong 5G results. Vodafone placed second across metro markets, securing more awards than most rivals and demonstrating improved 5G performance.

Three’s results in metro areas were notable for improved speeds and excellent 5G availability. Virgin Media O2 increased its speeds and produced solid results for text performance.

5G performance

RootMetrics highlighted two core dimensions of 5G performance: availability and speed.

EE and Three led on 5G availability, with EE achieving over 50 percent 5G availability in major cities. All four operators delivered impressive 5G median download speeds, with Three posting the highest median at 202.2 Mbps.

On reliability and latency, each operator produced strong results on 5G networks, indicating low delay and stable connections in tested areas.

Conclusion

EE remains the standout performer, collecting multiple awards and offering fast, dependable mobile experiences. At the same time, competitors such as Three, Virgin Media O2 and Vodafone have made meaningful gains, creating a more competitive market that benefits consumers.

As the UK’s 5G rollout continues, users can expect broader availability, higher speeds and ongoing improvements in network performance that will enhance everyday mobile use.
