Telefónica Partners with Nokia and Ericsson to Launch 5G in Two Spanish Cities

Telefónica has partnered with Nokia and Ericsson to begin deploying 5G capabilities in the Spanish cities of Segovia and Talavera de la Reina, as part of Telefónica’s 5G Technological Cities initiative that will serve as a model for nationwide 5G rollout.

By 2020, Segovia and Talavera de la Reina will become 5G living laboratories hosting a range of pioneering capabilities: initial 5G capacity, deployment of new 5G network infrastructure, and development of practical 5G use cases that will deliver benefits to residents and businesses. The new mobile generation promises substantially higher speeds—rising from typical 4G peaks to between 1 Gbps and up to 10 Gbps in ideal conditions—along with greatly reduced latency.

Ericsson is contributing to the advancement and standardization of 5G, while Nokia is supplying standards-based 5G technology designed to be compatible with future 5G devices and services, positioning both vendors at the forefront of commercial 5G deployment.

Use cases will be developed and validated through concept tests of new services, products, user experiences, and business models. Among these pilot projects are connected-car applications developed in collaboration with SEAT and FICOSA, which aim to improve road safety and traffic management. Additional potential use cases enabled by 5G include large-scale Internet of Things (IoT) deployments, automation and digitization of industrial processes, remote operation of critical systems, telemedicine, immersive mobile gaming, and remote control of drones.

Luis Miguel Gilpérez, CEO of Telefónica España, said: “With the 5G Technological Cities project, Telefónica is turning future technology into reality and delivering continuous service to people. That is why we will carry out network deployment and use-case development in parallel, so we can quickly bring new technologies to citizens—one of Telefónica’s clear objectives.”
