Samsung Launches SSD 990 EVO: Boosts Performance for Gaming, Work, and Creative Workflows

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a global leader in advanced memory technology, today announced the launch of the SSD 990 EVO — the newest addition to its consumer SSD lineup — delivering strong performance with improved power efficiency. Engineered to accelerate everyday computing tasks such as gaming, productivity and video editing, this NVMe SSD is positioned as an adaptable solution for a wide range of users.

“Samsung has refined its advanced memory technologies to create optimized SSD solutions, and for our latest consumer product we combined innovation with practical performance to enhance user experiences,” says Hangu Sohn, Vice President of Memory Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics. “The 990 EVO strikes a balance between performance, power efficiency and reliability, making it a versatile option for current interfaces and diverse everyday workloads including gaming, work and creative projects.”

Improved performance

The 990 EVO delivers notably improved performance — up to 43% faster compared with the previous model, the 970 EVO Plus. Sequential read speeds reach up to 5,000 megabytes per second (MB/s) with sequential writes up to 4,200 MB/s. Random read and write performance has also been enhanced, with figures up to 700,000 and 800,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS), respectively.

By employing Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology to leverage the host system’s DRAM, the SSD achieves optimized responsiveness even with a DRAM-less design. Users upgrading from older SATA or entry-level NVMe drives will notice faster game load times and quicker access to large media files.

Better efficiency and intelligent thermal management

The Samsung 990 EVO offers up to 70% better power efficiency compared with the 970 EVO Plus, enabling longer active use and reduced impact on battery life for laptops and mobile systems. It also supports Modern Standby, allowing near-instant on/off behavior while maintaining internet connectivity and receiving notifications even in low-power states.

The drive’s heat-spreading label helps control the thermal state of the NAND package, enabling sustained high performance without compromising the device’s integrity or stability under load.

A versatile SSD for current and future computing needs

The 990 EVO is designed as a flexible storage solution for today’s computing demands and anticipated future applications. It supports smooth multitasking and can handle everyday activities such as gaming, productivity tasks and creative workflows from a single drive.

Supporting both PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 interfaces, the 990 EVO meets the needs of contemporary systems with PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots while maintaining compatibility and thermal management provisions for future PCIe 5.0 applications.

The 990 EVO will be available in 1 terabyte (TB) and 2TB capacities.

Samsung Magician software support

Samsung Magician software provides a suite of optimization tools and management features for Samsung SSDs, including the 990 EVO. The software simplifies secure data migration during upgrades, monitors drive health, protects valuable data and notifies users of recommended firmware updates.

The product is available to consumers worldwide today. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the 990 EVO is 1,599 SEK for the 1TB model and 2,599 SEK for the 2TB model. For more information, including warranty details, consult Samsung’s official product pages.
