Progress toward next-generation, ultra-fast fiber-optic networks advanced markedly after successful interoperability tests for 50G-PON and 25GS-PON at a recent Plugfest event.
This important milestone came during the Broadband Forum’s Plugfest, an intensive interoperability workshop where technology vendors and operators validate that new equipment and software work together smoothly.
The gathering—held in partnership with LANPARK at AT&T Labs in Plano, Texas—was notable for hosting the first interoperability tests for 50G-PON. 25GS-PON was evaluated for the second time, reinforcing industry momentum toward broader deployment.
Participants included vendors and suppliers such as Adtran, Broadcom, Calix, CIG, Cortina Access, Gemtek, Lambda Networks, MT2, Nokia, Sagemcom, and Vantiva. They validated how Passive Optical Network (PON) components interact in emulated network environments, helping ensure that hardware and software from different suppliers can co-exist in real networks.
Craig Thomas, CEO of the Broadband Forum, said the industry must prioritise interoperability, co-existence, and collaboration to help broadband providers adopt the next generation of PON technologies. He praised the ongoing Plugfest series for bringing vendors together to advance both 25GS-PON and 50G-PON technologies, aided by LANPARK and AT&T Labs.
The Plugfest program is part of a multi-year testing effort intended to give vendors and operators confidence that equipment will interoperate reliably and be ready for smooth deployment when connecting homes and businesses to broadband provider networks.
Events are open to a broad range of participants, from manufacturers of optical line terminals (OLTs) and optical network units (ONUs) to chipset and software stack providers, residential gateways with PON interfaces, and specialised test and measurement equipment suppliers.
Sumithra Bhojan, Director—Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Labs, stressed the importance of interoperability across diverse operator networks to support a multi-vendor broadband ecosystem as PON technologies evolve. She highlighted the Broadband Forum’s role in fostering collaboration among operators, silicon and optics vendors, software developers, and equipment makers to enable seamless integration and ongoing innovation.
Thierry Doligez, CEO of LANPARK, noted that each Plugfest yields measurable interoperability improvements between products from different manufacturers, demonstrating the value of these testing events and the relevance of the Broadband Forum’s PON interoperability program.
During the recent trials, the 25GS-PON TC-PMD layer—responsible for the physical transmission and reception of signals—was tested for a second time. The event also introduced the first tests of 25GS-PON OMCI, which governs management and control of customer-premises equipment, and the inaugural testing of the 50G-PON TC-PMD layer.
These tests establish technical benchmarks and show that the industry is aligning its hardware and software stacks in preparation for the next wave of fiber deployments. Vendor feedback gathered during Plugfests is a vital part of refining test plans and improving subsequent events.
Work will continue: the Broadband Forum has scheduled upcoming Plugfests to extend interoperability testing and validation. The next PON Plugfest will be hosted by the LANPARK Laboratory in Tours, France, from July 7–10, 2025, focusing on XGS-PON and further refinement of 25GS-PON and 50G-PON. Following that, the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) will host a session from October 6–10, 2025.
Together, these efforts help clear the path for a future in which digital services are faster, more reliable, and ready to support the next generation of applications and experiences.
